Reading 1951, Boston 1961

The Town of Reading, Massachusetts was organized in the late 1630s as the village of Wood End in the township of Lynn.  Fast forward 310 years or so to 1950, and the State of Massachusetts had built a "Ring Road" highway around Boston.  I happen to have digital images of the U. S. Geological Survey topographical maps for my area, updated just after Route 128 was built.

Ten years later, the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate I-90) was in place, from the west to Route 128 in Natick.  The north-south interstate web was still in the planning stages, but urban Boston and the surrounding suburbs are here.
