Back Flamingo Beach Resort
Pelican Key, Sint Maarten
Next
Back around 1990, we had some neighborhood friends up the street who owned a timeshare on the Dutch side of the island of Saint Martin and Sint Maarten.  The resort was expanding by building a new complex down on the waterfront with a new beach on Pelican Point.  We took advantage of a discount and bought a spring week in two first-floor studio units on the beach.

Our first visit was with Jason, our youngest, while the new units were still under construction.  Several later visits were much nicer, with the new beach literally at our doorstep.

Our regular week was in the first half of April, week 15 of the timeshare calendar, with Easter sometimes falling on one of the weekends.  After a few years of trouble-free vacations, Hurricane Luis swept over the area in September, 1995.  The resort buildings survived, but every leaf on every tree and bush on the island was stripped away.  We traded our weeks for visits to Williamsburg, Virginia and Orlando, Florida while the island was recovering.

As the years passed along the island became a well-known and comfortable destination.  One memorable event is worthy of more note – in 2006 the boys were mostly grown, so we signed up for a snorkling excursion and a visit to an attraction on the British island of Anguilla, several miles to the north.
