Mrs. Mary K. Root, wife of the late Prof. Ralph E. Root,
died October 10, 1966 in Boston, Massachusetts,
where she had been living with her daughter Olive R. Meader and son-in-law Dr. Ralph G. Meader,
Deputy Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Mrs. Root was born January 10, 1880, near Cedar Falls,
Iowa, a daughter of early Iowa pioneer stock from Rhode Island, Alexander
F. and Mary (Ballou) Batcheller. Mary (Mamie) Batcheller attended Normal School, then taught school
in Iowa and Missouri. In 1904 she married Ralph E. Root in Bunker Hill, Iowa. Their family
moved to Franklin Street, Annapolis in 1913 when Dr. Root accepted a teaching post at the U. S. Naval Academy.
For nearly 50 years Mrs. Root and her husband
lived in Annapolis, Maryland where she was an active member of the Calvary Methodist
Church in State Circle, a charter member of the League of Women Voters and a charter member
of the Annapolis Booklovers Club. Following Prof. Root's retirement in 1946, their summers were spent
in Sanbornton, New Hampshire at a small farm on Calef Hill.
She is survived by two sons, two daughters, and nine grandchildren:
Captain Lloyd E. Root, U.S.N. (Ret.) of Seattle, Washington, now associated with a
firm of consulting engineers (Shannon & Wilson, Inc.);
Mr. Ellis P. Root, of Baltimore, Maryland, Divisional Sales Manager, Investors Diversified Services, Inc.;
Mrs. Ralph G. Meader, wife of the former Associate Director of the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland,
who is presently Deputy Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts; and
Mrs. John B. Tuttle, wife of an official of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, Pelham Manor, New York.
The grandchildren are currently students at the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis MD),
Brown University (Providence RI), Harvard University (Cambridge MA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge MA),
University of Rochester (Rochester NY), University of Washington (Seattle WA), Wellesley College (Wellesley MA), Seattle
(Washington} and Lutherville (Maryland} High Schools.
Funeral services were held at the Taylor Funeral Home,
Annapolis, Maryland, on Wednesday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m.
