DANIEL BERTINE STEWART, born 18-Nov-1762 in Litchfield, Litchfield Co., CT;
son of Daniel STEWART
born 1731 & Phoebe L. CHAPMAN born 1736;
died 20-Feb-1858 in Rome Township, Athens County,OH.
Daniel Stewart is considered by some to be the
youngest full time soldier of the Revolutionary War. Daniel
enlisted at the age of 15 in the service of the State of
Connecticut in Col. Enos Regiment, Capt. Abraham Bradley's
Company. He was discharged in January 1778. In the spring of
1778, he enlisted in the Army of the U.S. at Nelson's Point,
Col. Meig's Regiment, Gen. Pearson's Bergade [sic].
He helped to build the fort at West Point. Was discharged for
ill health. Upon regaining his health, Daniel was engaged as
a substitute for Nehemiah Marvin in a company commanded by
Capt. John Ensine in Col. Herman's regiment. He joined the
Army at West Point and was discharged at West Point in Sept.
In the spring of 1779, he enlisted for four months under Capt.
Abraham Bradley in the service of the State of Connecticut in
Col. Beebe's Regiment. In 1780, he enlisted for nine months
in the service of the U. S. under Pearson's Brigade.
Discharged on January 15, 1781. Later that year, he enlisted
in Capt. Miles's "Ranger" Company in Maj.
Humphrey's Battallion. He served until the end of the
conflict. Daniel was a Revolutionary War Soldier for five
years and received a pension on Oct. 3 1832. He became
prominent in the affairs of the county and the town of Athens
as well as the State University at Athens, for which he was appraiser.
